Springs Biggest Trends: As Spotted on Fashhh

Author: Becky Cope
Date: 2009-03-09 11:44

Spring is around the corner and the sun is finally out. This means one thing for fashionistas everywhere: the reinvention of the spring wardrobe. But don't worry what to wear, here's the fashion spring manual!

Every year we clear out the winter woollies; big jumpers, coats and hats, and replace them with warmer weather staples, as well as vibrant new looks fresh off the catwalks. This spring think Alexa Chung blazers, boho headbands and indie hats, playful print tights and acid wash denim. This is basically the best time to inject a bit of fresh life into your daily attire with new colours and patterns, whilst also keeping it practical. And remember, this was all found on Fashhh first with its delightfully stylish members, who sport the 6 key looks featured! These
are the things you need to update your 2009 spring wardrobe.

Acid Wash Denim

As seen on this lovely lady, denim is everywhere this spring. It cropped up on more catwalks than usual last September, with Balmain’s and Alexander Wang’s rock star inspired looks having a team of imitators on the high street. Denim jackets straight out of the nineties are heading for a come back, and add a really youthful touch to pretty summer dresses. They can be found everywhere from Topshop to New Look, as well as in charity shops. Denim look leggings are also really big at the moment, with great pairs to be found on www.asos.co.uk and at Urban Outfitters. This style is all about vitality and practicality; after all, denim was invented for working men! So throw on some stylish denim pieces for spring, but remember not to wear more than one item as otherwise it can look too matchy-matchy as well as a little bit Britney Spears circa 1999!

Indie Hats

These bad boys are the stylish girls weapon of choice this year, and I predict that they are going to be massive at the summer’s festivals. Just look at the obsession with them at Wunderkind and Betsey Johnson! Worn by fashionistas from Keira Knightley to Kate Moss, Erin O’Connor to Sienna Miller, the trilby really is one of the easiest ways to jazz up the most casual of spring outfits. Wear them with jeans and t-shirts for a bit of Erin Wasson-esque laidback chic, or with a little black dress to give it a rock star quality. Its not just trilbies being worn either. In fact, head wear is becoming one of the key signs of a fashionable lady. At London Fashion Week in February I spotted girls wearing Peter Pan felt hats, as well as little straw numbers and the ubiquitous beanie. Basically, you need a hat! Particularly good for bad hair days, and protection from the sun. See, fashion IS practical sometimes.

Blazers

The blazer has had a renewed life force for the past few seasons, and this season is no exception – just look at Alexander Wang. We’ve seen it cropped and oversize, and this spring I’m in favour of the oversized version as spotted on this Fashhh member. There is something so stylish about the way that a blazer can instantly add a bit of elegance to any outfit, as well as conversely its boyish charm and androgynous appeal. Blazers aren’t just for high school and your dad anymore. They are integral to every girls wardrobe (and boys!) They have an indie rep, and a well-deserved one, as they are a bit rock-n-roll in the same way that smart hats have been adapted to suit the lead singers of indie bands and their fans. We’re not ready to part with them yet – and they will definitely be sticking around this spring.  Grab one with crazy brass buttons, team it with a few vintage brooches and you’ve got a hot new look that no one else is wearing.

Headbands

These are just getting better and better every season, with more experimentation and as the fashion world grows to love them as something of a twenty-first century staple. Spotted on the catwalk of Diane Von Furstenberg  and on all the front rows, these are the fashionistas favourite accessory. They have a great hippy vibe and boho feel, and instantly transform your look. Think faux hair plaits, silver chain, gold gem stones, feathers and beading. Wear more than one combined to create a newer, bolder look. Pick them up on the high street and from online boutiques that make them specially.  Everyone needs to have at least one. I have about 8. They are all 100% necessary! The best thing about them is that they go with everything – it is impossible to wear one that clashes.

Vibrant Prints

It’s spring, it’s sunny outside (hopefully!) so why not get a little bit colourful for once? Bold patterns were everywhere on the s/s 09 catwalks, with everything from Christopher Kane’s animal prints to Wunderkind’s rose prints. Winter clothing is famed for its use of monotones and chic black, grey and brown but spring should be about fun – letting your hair down and making daisy chains in the park. To match the ethos of hopeful and youthful spring, our clothes should be similarly spontaneous. One of the best and easiest ways to do this is through colour and pattern. As with the printed tights described below, printed skirts and dresses really do put a smile on your face and quickly update your wardrobe from dull winter to exciting spring! Pastels are also extremely popular this year looking at Wang’s and Topshop Boutique’s fascination with them for their s/s 09 collections.

Print Tights

Rose-patterned, leopard print, dotty, striped, snake skin, tartan: the patterned tight has evolved this season and the streets are awash with legs sporting tights of every pattern imaginable. Hosiery, like headwear, is the newest fashion fascination. So much more can be done with it than in previous years, with the newest takes on patterns, footless, stirrups, seams, hold ups, knee socks and lace edging. Patterned tights can complete any outfit and make it a bit special. But beware – these tights should be worn with care. Don’t wear them with other crazy clashing prints unless you want to look like a kid hyper on blue smarties has raided her mother’s wardrobe! That said, anyone can wear them. The best bets are simple patterns worn with plain dresses and ballet flats. Take the style of this lovely lady as a good look to follow – her gingham print is subtle enough to allow her to pull off the leopard print tights, and the black leather jacket keeps it simple too.

Great tips. I especially love the headbands and the indie hats. Spring wardrobe should be colorful and creative. :)

Meet a Great Contributor: Becky Cope

Author: The Fashhh Team
Date: 2009-03-03 12:56
Meet Becky Cope. She has written lots of articles for Fashhh lately, she has experience from ElleGirl, Grazia and others, and she loves Chuck Bass, No wonder we like her!

What's your fashion experience?
- I’ve interned in fashion at ElleGirl and Grazia magazines and currently co-edit the style section of The Sanctuary newspaper. Last year I created and edited the style section of durham21 online magazine. I’ve also contributed to fashhh and fashionising, as well as helping run fashion shows at university.

When did you first become interested in fashion?
- It’s hard to say. I have always loved dressing up and putting on princess dresses, I was never one of the kids with dirt on their clothes! At sixteen I did work experience at my favourite magazine ElleGirl, and got a job at Topshop and these things combined with the new freedom to wear what I wanted to in the sixth form at school meant that I was suddenly overwhelmed with style and shopping. My addiction to shopping was a means to an end for me to discover my clichéd passion for fashion.

Why is fashion important?
- It is important as a mode of self-expression and as an outlet for creativity. I enjoy dressing to my mood and dressing for a purpose or a theme. In this way, clothes are like the artist’s paint and we’re the canvas!

Today's best dressed male and female?
- Best dressed male has pretty much got to be Ed Westwick, better known as Chuck Bass, on Gossip Girl. I love his quirky gentrified look, with blazers, ties, hats in eccentric cuts and colours, whilst staying smart. Best dressed female is harder to decide, but its got to be a toss up between Erin Wasson and Mary-Kate Olsen, whose style I adore. For me, its all about individuality and these ladies have it in abundance. Especially with their laid-back chic and grungy cool – it’s a look we can all aspire to.

... and worst dressed?
- Hmm… I think there are a lot of badly dressed people! Anyone who wears a waist-belt with a t-shirt, or trainers on a daily basis, or sportswear consistently – people who basically don’t make any effort whatsoever. Celebrity-wise, worst dressed is probably someone like Jordan, Madonna or Christina Aguilera. Basically, trashy style.

What do you think of Barak Obama's style?
- Pretty standard middle-aged dad style! His politics on the other hand have serious style.

What's the worst rumour you've heard about yourself or your blog?
- Rumours largely come from some gem of truth and in my experience, all rumours I’ve heard about me, even if they are bad, have usually been true. That said, I’ve never done anything bad enough really to be talked about!

Why should people read your blog posts?
- I use my blog for self-reflection and fashion thoughts and rambles, its decidedly light-hearted but thoughtful and with a lot of heart put into it. Read it for a dip into the sartorial world and to see what I’m thinking about current trends, designers, models and generally stuff that I am inspired by or am absolutely obsessed with.

Why should people join Fashhh?
- It’s a great place to get inspiration from others street style. What stylish people are wearing around the world is definitely one of the most inspiring things for me, and Fashhh gives you the opportunity to spy it first hand from the other side of the world.

The most exciting brand and designer at the moment?
Got to be youth hero Alexander Wang. His clothes are stunning, and are essentially the style I most conform to – a little bit edgy and rock and roll but also kept simple through tailoring and detail, such as rhinestones and ripping combined with tapered jeans and fitted jackets. In general though, Chanel and Balmain are two of the most exciting designers for me personally.

Hey! And don't forget to check out her blog!

The best of New York fashion week

Author: Becky Cope
Date: 2009-02-21 19:59
Here’s a round up of my favourite designers who have showcased their latest collection in New York recently, each of which has something completely different to offer.

The young and youthful Alexander Wang

First up, it’s new favourite and insatiably youthful Alexander Wang. The San Francisco native dazzled the audience of his adopted home with a more grown up collection from s/s 09. This time round his designs featured more tailoring, seen in his suit jackets and the military precision of the cut of his geometrical dress. For a/w the collection is suitably dark but far from gothic: think elegant sex appeal and maturity and you’re on the right track. The midriff exposure is still present for this season, but toned down by its bodycon fit and monotone black. Trousers are tightly fitted and fringed with gem stones, complimented with billowing white off-the shoulder shirts. Aside from this, there is a heavy focus on croc, leather look and pvc. Front row Queen Anna Wintour and daughter Bee Shaffer were amongst the lucky viewers, who also included Zoe Kravitz, Erin Wasson and Santogold. Definitely a crowd cool enough for the designer’s ethos.

Rodarte - Kirsten Dunts' favourite.

Next it’s Rodarte, favourite of Kirsten Dunst. This season is very reminiscent of the futurism already seen at Ghesquière’s take over of Balenciaga: with ultra modern fabrics, bodycon bandaging and layering in pastel shades, combined with daring use of volume and shape. The sister designers have described the collection as inspired by monsters – something that can be seen in the Edward Scissorhands’ esque straight jacket sleeves. I adore the grey shaggy fur belted in jacket and endless black boots. Over on this front row was of course Miss Dunst, not to mention Rachel Zoe and Diane von Furtsenberg, and rather bizarrely Elijah Wood of hobbit fame.

Marchesa from New York

Oh, and how can I forget Marchesa? Last but certainly not least of my top 3 from New York. The collection is all about fairy tales and fantasy: a staple of Marchesa’s wardrobe for a few seasons. The beautiful creations were bejewelled, one-shouldered, well fitting and in an array of fantastical shapes, styles and colours. Some dresses sweep the floor with puffy net skirts, others are elegantly nipped in with sashes and bows. There were strapless jumpsuits in simple monotones, set off with the purest details. My favourite has to be the fantastic black sequined strapless dress, which reached to the floor and was surrounded by net: a vision of pure fashion fantasy. I want one.

Scruff it up

Author: Becky Cope
Date: 2009-02-10 21:40
Have you ever noticed how a lot of the best dressed lists are comprised of people your mom would call scruffy? You know, those twenty-somethings who dress with a bit of bohemian spirit, a rock and roll rough edge and a touch of the scruff about them? The usual suspects of this trend are Kirsten Dunst, Erin Wasson and Alexa Chung: three of my personal style icons.

My mother constantly complains about seeing these ladies in magazines under ‘best dressed’. There is something so thoroughly youthful and modern about this look – something best appreciated by the young and misunderstood by the older generation. Our mothers’ generation were inspired by the put-together elegance of Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O, and lived through chic 1980s power dressing. Instead we have Sienna Miller’s boho revolution and the reinvention of the hippy spirit and boyish chic in Kate Moss’s androgynous style of skinny jeans and tuxedo jackets.

Staples of the scruff style are knee high socks, grand-dad shirts, oxford flats, faded and fraying denim as well as waist coats galore. Dunst is often photographed wearing this entire ensemble, complete with pendants and Rayban wayfarers. Chung’s taste is a little more refined, with high-waisted skirts matched with school boy blazers and shoes, making her pretty much synonymous with dressing-down outfits. Wasson again is different, with a penchant for trilbies and oversized tees over skinny jeans. All three have their individuality intact – the most important aspect of the scruffy look. This look is throwing together timelessly stylish pieces in a street-wise way in order to show personality and creativity.

Even the catwalks are getting in on this look. Balmain’s recent s/s 09 collection embraced it, with his rock-star studded jackets and scruffed up faded denim jeans, topped off with the bohemian’s best friend – the gladiator sandal. Even ripped tights cropped up on the catwalks this season. So what’s so wrong with scuffed shoes and holey tights? It’s fashionable mom!

Hurrah to Knee Socks!

Author: Becky Cope
Date: 2009-02-02 21:11
Knee socks have undergone something of a reinvention recently. Formerly the stuff of school girls at fancy school, knee socks can actually now be kind of cool, and definitely very sexy. This is largely thanks to the experimental research of such fashionistas as Alexa Chung, Peaches Geldof and Lindsay Lohan.

Knee socks should stretch to the thigh and rest just above the knee. It’s best to avoid crazy patterns and colours like grey, white and black seem to work best. They can be worn with oxford flats for a boyish twist à la Kirsten Dunst, or with knee high boots for a flash of sex appeal. Peaches proves you can even wear them with wellies at a festival! Probably best to keep your skirt length on the decent side too – we don’t want to inadvertently show everyone our M&S best pants!

Find them on the high street, with some very cheap pairs at New Look and Topshop.

Goddess Trend

Author: The Fashhh Team
Date: 2009-01-27 17:18
Aphrodite. Athena. Hera. Lets face it, the Greek goddesses conjure up images of elegance, power, and earth-shattering beauty. There’s a reason why these ladies have had a lasting impression on our cultural consciousness (as well as our Classics departments). The goddess dress is nothing new. After all, elegant Greek inspired dresses have been seen on the catwalks for the last few seasons, as well as the continuing popularity of the gladiator sandal for summer.

There are some evolutions though. This season fabrics are sheer, revealing glimpses of the sexy goddess body, and the length is generally long and floaty with trains seen at Christian Dior and Marchesa. John Galliano’s avant-garde reinterpretation is striking in its elegant use of ornamentation, something seen with Malandrino as well. Elegant drapery and nipped in waists truly give the impression of cloud-skimming ability, whilst keeping the look fresh and modern. I particularly love the use of colour in the dresses I’ve chosen; the use of monotone neutral pastels as well as bold whites and surprising orange at Halston.

I love how Mischa Barton pulls the trend off in a Matthew Williamson creation. This is so effective due to its grace as well as fun feel – with its free flowing maxi length and flower pattern it has an almost hippy like feel, complete with arm bracelets worn high up like cuffs. Indeed, to pull this trend off simple accessories are key; sparse jewellery and flat shoes with a maxi length, or classic heels with a mini-dress.

Dressing Up In The Financial Crisis

Author: Becky Cope
Date: 2009-01-22 18:38
In the economic climate, a return to 1940s rural fashion is on the cards. After all its just oh-so-fitting. Strapped for cash during and after World War 2, we economised our wardrobes and stuck to practical, simple numbers that were also pretty to beat the doom and gloom. Strapped for cash because of the economic downturn and recession, we can do the same.

The high street is awash with Anglocentric vintage fashion. It can be found in New Look, Topshop, Urban Outfitters, and those are just the main three! Think ditsy floral prints and embroidery adorned tops and cardigans, combined with pastel-coloured trousers and skirts. And don’t forget your gingham! Accessorize with cute bow detailing and keep it simple with brown or white Oxford flats for your feet. Add a retro net fascinator for a bit of extra glamour. Just have fun with it! The look is reminiscent of British summer holidays and caravanning in Cornwall – and yes, that’s a good thing!

This look is so different to the trends that have dominated the catwalk for the last few seasons. There’s no sign of constrictive bodycon, bondage fetishes or haphazard footwear. It is no where near as serious. It’s all about practicality, wearability and fresh fun, think rollicking in the countryside or on the beach with an ice-cream and the chance of a donkey ride. So yes, “we do all love to be beside the sea-side”, as the song goes, if this is what we are wearing!

1. Floral top from Topshop.
2. Floral day dress from New Look.
3. Floral print shift from Topshop.
4. Fascinator from Accessorize.
5. White Jeans from Topshop.
6. Oxford flats from Office.

Hot to Crop

Author: Becky Cope
Date: 2009-01-15 20:35
Be afraid, be very afraid. The cropped top, exposed midriff and barely there underwear as outwear are back with a vengeance. Last seen circa 1998 on Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera on tour, this staple of 1990s and pop star fashion is back for the end of the decade. But this time, its high fashion. REALLY.

God-like designer for the youth, Alexander Wang, flaunted his models’ midriffs with a cut off sweater in dusty lilac – a look I think that we can all embrace (minus a few Big Macs and plus about 100 sit ups!) Forever edgy, Vivienne Westwood Red Label also picked up on the trend, giving the traditional print suit a playful twist with a cropped top matched with pencil skirt. Even Prada got in on the action, with models parading black cropped underwear as outwear, teamed with skirts and jackets, all in elegant black to keep it from looking trashy.

So embrace your inner Clueless and Saved By The Bell, and relive the youthful playfulness of the 1990s. Cropped tops can be found at Topshop in the ‘Work it’ range and at Urban Outfitters.

Now that’s what I call some good exposure!
